Vitesse Press, formed by Barbara George in Brattleboro, Vermont,
soon grew into a successful publisher of bicycle racing books and
the magazine, Velo-News. Dick Mansfield began Acorn Publishing in
New York State in the mid-eighties as a vehicle for his first three
self-published books, "Runner's Guide To Cross Country Skiing,"
Skating on Skis," and "Vermont Mountain Biking." Mansfield purchased
Vitesse Press in 1995 and merged it with Acorn Publishing.
One of the hallmarks of our history has been the success of first-time
authors. Fit and Pregnant by Joan Marie Butler went through ten printings and is now completely revised for a new edition. Cycling Along The Canals of New York State by Louis Rossi was just released in a new edition.
We are about to go to print on a new book by Heidi Hill called Fit Family. The book offers advice on how to stay fit with your infant, toddler, and pre-school age child. It will feature personal experiences from parents about incorporating fitness into family life as well as recommendations on joggers, packs, bike trailers, and ski pulks. Fitness will relate to running, hiking, biking, cross country skiing, swimming, and yoga. A chapter will also be dedicated to nutrition and the importance of providing wholesome foods for exercise outings and for overall health.
Fit Families is scheduled for publication in Fall 2008. Heidi Hill, author of the book, is a mother of two girls, ages 3 and 9 months, who runs, cross country skis, and hikes with her family. Her husband and contributor to the book, Tom Thurston, is a former bike racer who now competes in cross-country skiing. They live in Waterbury, Vermont.
The author and her family at Smuggler's Notch, Vermont.
